Richard's Reflections (February 2025)

Writer: Rev Richard MilesRev Richard Miles

We are now well into 2025. And the first month has been eventful in terms of world events, the inauguration of Donald Trump, the peace deal in the Middle East, the terrible fires in Los Angeles to name but a few. And it is extremely important that we pray for each of these things, and many others. And we are assured that God is in control of everything.

But I want to think about things closer to home; and over the next few months these reflections will be about them. Please don’t think I have forgotten the big picture. As I say, we are to be concerned about those things too and commit them to the Lord.

As a church, it is good for us to think about our focus as we go ahead. We need to ask ourselves the question “what does God want us to do?” It is important that we don’t just see church as somewhere we go on a Sunday morning and forget about it the rest of the time. Our Sunday worship is part of our life together as God’s people here in Govilon. We are to serve God in the community where he has placed us. There will be opportunities over these next months for us to think together about that. We will introduce it at the AGM, there will be discussions with the diaconate and then a Church Vision Day, which we hope to hold in May.

And there is something we can all do. And that is pray. Even if you are not able to get to the services at the moment, you can do that in your home or wherever you are.

This is God’s work that we are doing. Paul writes these very encouraging words to the church at Philippi:

I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Philippians 1 v 3 – 5

Encouraging words for us too as we pray for what God wants us to do.
